Our History

Ball Packaging Europe came into being at the end of 2002 following the takeover of Schmalbach-Lubeca GmbH by the US American packaging company, Ball Corporation, which as a result became the world's largest beverage can producer in the world.

Since April 1, 2003 the company has been doing business under the name Ball Packaging Europe as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ball Corporation. The former company "Schmalbach-Lubeca" was a long established company with more than 100 years' experience in packaging production.

The Schmalbach-Lubeca was set up in 1898 in Brunswick, Germany, by Johann Andreas Schmalbauch.  Innovative metal packaging was already being marketed then: a new type of can to preserve asparagus. In 1951 Schmalbach launched the first can for beer on the German market.
